How To Customize A Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP) Course

Tailor the CSSP course to reflect your school's adopted plan before assigning it to staff. Customization is required to meet California Education Code requirements.

Before You Start

What You'll Need

  • Your school’s current, board-adopted Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP) (or district-level CSSP if your school uses it)
  • Your school’s:
    • Crime and abuse reporting procedures
    • Current crisis plans and procedures
    • Public agency access procedures
    • Student suspension and expulsion policies
    • Discrimination and harassment policy
    • Dress code policy
    • Safe school entrance and exit procedures
    • Procedures for maintaining a safe and orderly environment
    • School discipline rules and procedures
    • Immigration enforcement notification procedures
    • Tactical response procedures
    • Reunification plan and family communication procedures
  • A summary of how your school cooperates with other school site councils

If you don’t have a current, adopted CSSP yet, you’ll need to complete that step with your safety planning committee before this course can be customized and assigned.

Important: Why Customization Is Required

Most EasyLlama courses are ready to assign out of the box, but CSSP courses require customization for two reasons:

  1. Every school’s plan is different. Emergency contacts, evacuation routes, rally points, lockdown procedures, drill schedules, and reunification protocols vary by
school, even within the same district. Generic content can’t prepare staff to act on the plan they actually work under.
  2. California Education Code expects training to reflect the adopted plan. Each school is required to provide staff with training on its specific CSSP. Training that doesn't align with your school's adopted plan doesn't satisfy the requirement's intent.

Quick Reference

  • Course location: Trainings > Library > Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP)
  • Customization required: Yes, to meet California Education Code requirements.
  • Key section to customize: Chapter 9, "Your Individualized CSSP" (13 customizable slides)
  • Annual review: CSSPs must be reviewed at least annually

Customize the CSSP Course

Step 1: Open the CSSP Course

  1. Log in to the EasyLlama admin dashboard
  2. Go to Trainings > Library
  3. Search for “Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP)"

Step 2: Create Custom Version

On the desired course card, either:

  • Click Customize on the Make It Yours tag, or
  • Click the three-dot menu (⋮) and select Customize

Step 3: Proceed with Customization

Read the pop-up for tips on how to customize, publish, and activate the course. Click Proceed, and once the course is created, click Review & Edit to begin customization.

Step 4: Navigate to Chapter 9

Go to Chapter 9: Your Individualized CSSP—this is where all customization happens.

  • Chapter 9, Slide 1, labeled “Your Individualized CCSP,” can either be deleted via the three-dot icon > Delete, or the text and narration can be updated to introduce your school’s details.

Step 5: Enter Your School’s Details

Work through each of the 12 remaining customizable slides and update them with your school’s specific information. If desired, a Slide Narration can be added, or a new background image can be uploaded or selected.

To update:

  1. Using the Chapter/Slide navigation, click on the slide.
  2. Edit the information by clicking into the text boxes within the slide.
  3. If desired, click Slide Narration to input and generate speech, or click the Edit background button to upload or select a new background image.

Keeping the Course Current

CSSPs are reviewed at least annually and whenever your school's procedures change.

When Your Plan Is Updated:

  1. Return to Courses > California Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP)
  2. Click into the course
  3. Select Custom Version > Edit
  4. Update the slides that changed
  5. Click Publish Changes (this saves and republishes the update)

For Learners Who Already Completed the Course:

  • Learners assigned after republishing will see the updated content
  • If changes are material (new evacuation route, new lockdown procedure, new reunification location), reassign the course to staff who have already completed it so they can review the updates

Helpful Tips

Don’t: Why It's a Problem Correct Approach
Skip customization The course will not reflect your actual plan; so it won’t meet legal requirements Complete all 13 slides in Chapter 9
Customize the course without plan owner approval Content may be inaccurate or unapproved Share a preview with the plan owner, so they can review the content before publishing and assigning the course
Forget to update when the plan changes Staff trained on outdated procedures Update and republish immediately
Forget to reassign after the content changes Staff do not see, and are not trained on critical updates Reassign the course to affected learners
